In India, having a ‘sportsman’s spirit’ is perhaps one of the biggest compliments to receive. Irrespective of age, gender, religion & any other possible differentiation that exists, the country unifies the day India plays another country. We love Bollywood & are ardent fans of all the stars but we bleed sports & idolize our sportsmen a tad bit more.

Here’s a list of legends who’ve left a mark of themselves on us & the world-

Milkha Singh

It’s not for nothing that he’s known as ‘the flying Sikh’. The pride of India did a lot more than winning medals; he did what nobody else did, back in his time. Milkha Singh introduced running as a profession to the country. His journey is not only about the gold medals he won for the country but also the victory he missed by an inch in the Rome Olympics where he finished faster than the standing world record. He’s a game changer, a game winner, a legend & an unmatched sportsperson.

*Bows down*

Prakash Padukone

The poise & grace with which Padukone ruled badminton courts with his hits has always been a sight to sore eyes. Lifting his racquet in all his glory, he was known to slide away trophies almost effortlessly with his focus & grit. In all trueness, he belonged to a different league.

Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev’s name is always affixed with the word ‘best’ & that applies to not one but all of his talents. The Goosebumps that we get when we hear Kapil Dev & Lords stadium is just about enough to remind anyone about his passion. India’s first true pace bowler & best all-rounder, he retired from the Indian Cricket Team as the highest wicket taker ever. He has left the game but hasn’t moved an inch from our minds.

Vishwanathan Anand

Almost synonymous to chess in India, Anand prepares for his game like a scientist & has literally conquered champions from around the world with his focus & precision. He’s a world champion, a grandmaster, an Arjuna awardee, an Olympic winner, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan receiver & an undefeated sportsperson.

Sachin Tendulkar

There’s nothing that we really have to say about this legend. His sport & his history talks on his behalf. He has left the ‘Sachin Tendulkar’ style on cricket as a whole & has set a benchmark for many. Every aspiring cricketer in the country doesn’t aim to be successful, he aims to be Sachin Tendulkar and that’s the final word on his achievements.

The country has been blessed to have these & many other sportsmen who’ve taken India a step ahead on many levels. Although off field, they continue to inspire us.

Dear legends, you won’t retire from our minds. Not now, not ever.
